It must be the time of year but I have seen in a number of papers recently and other media outlets worthy articles about the importance of making a will. Even the Financial Times ran a practical advice column a few weeks ago. And I recently met an actress (sorry an actor) who told me that when she was not acting she was heavily involved in getting people to talk about death and bereavement and making sure their affairs were in order and discussing with family and friends. Perhaps it is all to do with Donald Trump and a feeling of impending doom!

Multiple Executors

Executors can come as singles, doubles or trebles, or sometimes even more, but seldom exceeding four. Are multiple executors a good thing? As usual the answer is – it all depends. Let’s say your husband has died and you are the sole beneficiary. You will probably think it is a good thing that you are a sole executor. Why should anyone else get involved? I have seen cases where a testator has appointed his wife and his mother! The cooperation during the administration of the estate is not always superb.

Executor - Save Yourself Time

You have probably seen that TV advert about a company called something like wesellanyoldbanger.com. The theme of the advert is a chap who wants to sell his car, playing with his daughter, and musing upon the quality time he now has after he decided to use the company to sell his car. Ok, he may not have made so much money but the few pounds he may have lost are more than compensated by the time he has to spend on more important things. A similar point could be made about the increasing emphasis on DIY probate. You can certainly save yourself some money but you may end up spending many hours which will be lost forever.
