Probate Fee Increase 2017

Probate is changing in May'17

We regret to inform our clients that as of May 2017, we will no longer be able to include the Probate Registration fee in our fixed fee probate quotes. However, if you instruct our experts as soon as possible, you may be able to beat the Government increase in Probate Registration fees. Don’t delay, contact us today.

Increase in Probate Fees 2017

As of May 2017, the Government is planning to introduce a sliding scale of charges for Probate Registration fees.  As a result, there will be an increase in the price of probate services. The increase in fees is designed to assist in funding the courts, and make the payment of fees fairer. Larger estates will pay more in fees, and very small estates will be exempt.

However, you can beat probate fees altogether by instructing our lawyers today, and giving yourself the chance of avoiding the price increases.

Probaters’ lawyers (as the name suggests) are probate experts. We offer competitively priced fixed-fee probate services. Unfortunately, we will have to change our policy of including the Probate Registry fee in our fixed quotes, from May this year - so act now to beat the increase. After the changes are introduced, we will continue to offer fixed-fee services, but you will be required to pay the Probate Registry fee in addition to our fixed quote.

How are Probate fees changing?

As of May this year, the Government are abolishing the fixed Registry fee of £215 (£155 for lawyers) and introducing a sliding scale of charges. Although it is alleged that the new system is fairer, as it allows very small estates to avoid payment of the fees altogether, it will mean dramatically increased costs for larger estates. The table below outlines the new proposed charges for registration.

As can be seen, the price increase is significant – especially for business owner estates and estates of a higher value. Even if you consider the estate you are handling to be modest, with increase in property values, the deceased’s assets can soon add up, and you could find that you are paying a great deal more in probate fees than you have to. If you act now, there is a good chance you can avoid the Probate Registration fee hike, and pass on more to the estate’s beneficiaries. Contact us today to find out how we can help.

Furthermore, we are dedicated to making our pricing structure straightforward and transparent, that is why we offer fixed fee probate services (including VAT, but excluding Probate Registration fees from May 2017) instead of charging an hourly rate, or a percentage of the deceased’s estate.
